Thirios Athanasios

Pediatrician, Academic Fellow of MSc "Strategies of Developmental and Adolescent Health", School of Medicine, University of Athens

Athanasios Thirios is a pediatrician, a graduate of Medical School of the University of Athens. I have a master’s degree in “Clinical Pediatrics and Nursing – Research” of the Medical School of Athens and I am completing the postgraduate study program “Developmental and Adolescent Health Strategies” of the Medical School of Athens. At the same time, he is a PhD candidate at the National Kapodistrian University of Athens. He completed the Medical Management Program 2019, of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA).

He worked at EODY, in accommodation structures for refugees and unaccompanied minors and as an assistant pediatrician at the Vironas Health Center.

Since 2019 he is an Academic Scholar of the Adolescent Health Unit of the 2nd University Pediatric Clinic of the Medical School of Athens and has been actively involved in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate students, in amphitheater classes and in clinical laboratories.

At the present time, he is an Academic Scholar of the postgraduate study program “Developmental and Adolescent Health Strategies” and carries out teaching work (clinical and theoretical) in the context of students’ internship. He also now actively participates in the teaching of postgraduate students with lectures on “Developmental and Adolescent Health”. Also, he is an educator and participates in the coordination of the training program of the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the NKUA and EPIPSY for the social / emotional empowerment and mental resilience of children and adolescents in the days of Covid-19 to health professionals and other sectors. At the same time, he participates in the design and implementation of the first online platform youth to youth (we-knowhow) as well as in the implementation and presentation of educational programs in schools and Parents’ Academies during the Academic years 2019-2020, 2020-2021, 2021-2022. Athanasios Thirios participates also in the creation of information material on Developmental and Adolescent Health and Child & Adolescent Behavior.

He has a rich writing and research work, as so far he has participated in 6 foreign language publications in a total of recognized international journals (76 citations) and in 2 Greek journals, focusing on psychiatry, pediatrics, developmental and adolescent health and the COVID-19 pandemic, while he is also a member of the COVID survey team of the postgraduate study program “Developmental and Adolescent Health Strategies”, which focuses on research on the effects of the pandemic. He has participated in the research program of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens “Effects of atmospheric ozone exposure on the respiratory system of children, RESPOZE” and in the “Network of primary health care monitoring – doctors of the Health Centers program -SENTINEL”. He has also participated in a number of speeches and announcements at conferences and seminars, especially on pandemic issues. He also participated in the writing of four manuals on the sexual education of children and adolescents and two manuals on informing children and adolescents about vaccines in collaboration with the Hellenic Society of Adolescent Medicine, of which he is an active member.

Athanasios Thirios is a reviewer in various international journals – Developmental and Adolescent Health, Cureus etc. He has participated in the organizing committee of many conferences, while at this stage he participates in the organization of the 22nd International Association for Adolescent Health (IAAH), Regional Conference.

Finally, he has been Vice President of the Association of Hospital Doctors of Zakynthos (ENIZ) for 2 years, member of the Scientific Council of the General Childrens’ Hospital of Penteli for 3 years, he works with ‘Hamogelo tou Pediou’ in preventive medicine programs, and I am a member of the volunteer group “Symplefsi (+ plefsi)”, with activities in the remote Greek islands.
